The pitch

The Var chapel is located along the Route des Confins at an altitude of 1,150m, in the typical hamlet of Var, 2km from the center of the village of La Clusaz.

Details

Chapelle du Var was founded by the heirs of François Donzel-Curtet: Jacques, Antoine, Claudia, and Pernette Curtet.
It is dedicated to Saint François de Sales, Saint Grat and Saint Symphorien.
After falling into ruin, it was rebuilt in 1827 thanks to the Reverend Rouph, parish priest of Les Clefs, and the Reverend Jean Collomb-Gros, prefect of the Collège de Thônes.
The latter donated the bell, placed in 1831, the altar and the ornaments.
Every spring, at Rogations time, a procession from the village attended mass, asking God for favorable harvest weather.
This chapel is steeped in the history of the village, as "VAR" is a deformation of "VAS" which, in old French, means "tomb". It was recently renovated.
