You often see natives of La Clusaz setting off to represent the village and France at the Winter Olympics. So when one of them comes back with a medal, it\u2019s difficult not to talk about it. This is the case of Hugo Lapalus, the bronze-medallist in the cross-country skiing relay at the Beijing Olympics. POURQUOI AS-TU CHOISI LE SKI DE FOND ? ET COMMENT T\u2019ES-TU RETROUV\u00c9 AVEC DES LATTES AUSSI FINES AUX PIEDS ?<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

Salut ! Je suis originaire de la vall\u00e9e voisine, et j\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 par de l\u2019alpin au Ski Club de Manigod. Mais, arriv\u00e9 au coll\u00e8ge en classe de sixi\u00e8me, j\u2019ai travers\u00e9 la montagne pour venir \u00e0 La Clusaz et m\u2019essayer au ski de fond. Depuis, j\u2019adore \u00e7a et je n\u2019ai jamais arr\u00eat\u00e9 !
\n\u00c0 l\u2019inverse des amoureux de descente et de vitesse, c\u2019est le type d\u2019effort, le sport d\u2019endurance et l\u2019environnement nature que j\u2019adore avant tout. Je fais aussi de la course en montagne, de la marche, du ski roue l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9\u2026 Toutes ces choses-l\u00e0 me plaisent plus que de faire de la muscu pour pr\u00e9parer les jambes et aller taper des piquets.<\/p>\n

C\u2019EST QUOI TON RYTHME AUJOURD\u2019HUI ?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

C\u2019est du boulot, beaucoup de boulot. On travaille 11 mois sur 12 pour \u00eatre au top en comp\u00e9tition. On attaque en mai avec des entra\u00eenements physiques et des stages d\u2019une semaine ou deux chaque mois. C\u2019est un rythme assez intense. L\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 passe assez vite avec une semaine \u00e0 la maison et des s\u00e9jours \u00e0 droite \u00e0 gauche pour s\u2019entra\u00eener.
\n\u00c0 l\u2019automne, on retourne skier sur les glaciers. Et, le d\u00e9but de saison arrive rapidement fin novembre, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 fin mars ; voire mi avril en fonction des conditions. Bref, \u00e7a fait de grosses saisons et on s\u2019entra\u00eene toute l\u2019ann\u00e9e pour \u00eatre performant HI HUGO. WHAT IS YOUR PACE OF LIFE LIKE TODAY?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s hard work, very hard. We work 11 months out of 12 to be in good condition for competitions. We start out with physical training in May and a one- or two-week training course per month. It\u2019s a fairly hectic pace. Summer goes by quite fast with one week at home and trips all over the place for training. In autumn we go back to skiing on the glaciers. The season soon arrives at the end of November, until late March or even mid-April, depending on the conditions.<\/p>\n

IT\u2019S QUITE NORMAL TO RELAX AND IT\u2019S WELL DESERVED AFTER A GREAT PERFORMANCE AT THE OLYMPICS THIS WINTER. SO, WHAT WAS IT LIKE?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was an unusual Olympics, but it was still the Olympics… The atmosphere wasn\u2019t necessarily brilliant due to the health crisis, daily COVID tests and the absence of spectators. But we lived like lords in between training sessions, with the hotel, the races and a bit of relaxation in a wonderful Olympic village.<\/p>\n

AND YOU CAME BACK WITH A MEDAL, WHICH IS NOT TO BE SNIFFED AT. TELL US ABOUT IT!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, an Olympic medal is worth all the gold in the world. Even if this one is bronze! It\u2019s a fine object, it\u2019s quite heavy. Plus, a team podium is not just for the athletes who ski on the slopes. The medal is shared with all the staff. I\u2019m delighted! It\u2019s a childhood dream come true. I tried to savour it to the full!<\/p>\n

SO, YES, WE RAISED A GLASS TO CELEBRATE THAT. DOES AN OLYMPIC MEDAL OPEN UP DOORS? WHAT CHANGES AFTERWARDS?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You are more visible and you get more private messages on Instagram… Joking aside, it\u2019s most of all easier to get sponsors and partners. Crosscountry skiing is not a very well-known sport, but when you win an Olympic medal, everyone understands what it means. It\u2019s something immense, beautiful, and it gives extra weight to a resume. There\u2019s no need to hold back, it\u2019s all part of the process. But there are also things that don\u2019t change. In La Clusaz, all the village supports its athletes in the best way possible. We are encouraged to reach the top, whatever our sport is. They help us in the cool times, but also when you\u2019re injured or things are hard.
